FURRY OF THE WEEK
Hello everyone! Welcome back to another edition of Furry of the Week! My name is Grace the Giraffe and I’ll be presenting today’s featured fur!
Today’s featured fur is Ash Fox (AKA Hearth Fox)!
While many of you may not recognize Ash Fox by name, I’m sure that many of you will recognize their creation: Wiggle!
Appearing seemingly out of nowhere at Anthrocon last weekend, Wiggle has since been seen by thousands of furs worldwide. Videos and fan art flooded Twitter during and after Anthrocon, and a new interest in puppetry seems to have arisen in their wake!
However, many of you, like me, are interested in the person behind the phenomenon, so I wanted to get in touch and learn more. Ash is a trans non-binary furry (they/them pronouns) with an emotional story to tell. If you wouldn’t mind, I would like to give it in Ash’s own words:
“The thing I love most about the fandom is that we all share this big wonderful creative spirit and this huge love for all things furry. It’s what brings us together, what drives us, what defines many of us and it (the fandom) is the very reason I feel like I have a place in this world at all.
“I’m a bit of an odd Fox. I’m a Therian who experiences species dysphoria. I suffer from a number of mental Illnesses including Bipolar, ADHD, and PTSD, and they make life challenging. Depression is a hell of a thing. It lies to you, holds you hostage, isolates you… Furries aren’t afraid of showing love to one another and that love keeps me going. It keeps me alive.
“Depression is what took Kohi (my friend who died of suicide) and it scared me deeply as she was the most courageous person I ever knew. Coming back to Anthrocon after losing her last year felt so difficult. I was teary eyed the whole drive from NY.
“I had made Wiggle two days before the con on a whim. I had made the head from Sculpey a few months ago, picked it up, and realized it would make a perfect marionette. I’ve always loved puppets. Many of the shows I watched as a Kit starred them and I remember playing with a fun pink bird puppet my grandparents had.
“I made Wiggle after working nonstop for weeks on art for the art show. I needed to do something good for myself as I was pretty burnt out. I knew I wasn’t feeling energetic enough to fursuit, so a puppet seemed perfect. I didn’t take them out at all on Thursday. I was too overwhelmed and too emotional being back. I wound up connecting with old friends and hugging lots, sharing stories and laughs. That night, I visited the mural myself and others (Nitelinez and Cypress) painted for Kohi last year. I had a full on breakdown. I sobbed for what felt like an hour and poured my feelings out to her… I think she heard me. I felt her cheering me on as I brought Wiggle around the con. I was always asking, ‘What would Kohi do?’ That’s how I wound up chasing the party everywhere. It’s what got me to jump the fence into the fursuit parade when the cops weren’t looking and sneak through three times. It's what got Wiggle into floor wars after running into a dance troop and letting them borrow him for their routine.
“Kohi’s spirit is what made Wiggle dance so hard for everyone. I don’t think I turned down a single request for a picture or video the whole time I was there. This weekend was truly the most positive one of my life and I feel like I’ve fallen in love with the community again tenfold.”
Thank you, Ash, for giving us insight about you and your inspiration. It is important to live on for those we lost and to keep their memory alive, and in a way that spreads love and joy to so many.

ART CORNER
Hi, you all! This is Yeshua and I’m happy to be able to bring you all another installment of the Art Corner segment!
If this is your first time reading, this segment is all about sharing artwork done by artists in the fandom! So you get to see some awesome art, along with a tiny bit of commentary about what I think are the highlights of each piece!
I also want to mention that I am not the permanent host of the section, and we are looking for someone to help us write it, so if you enjoy seeing furry artwork and perhaps writing about it, this might be for you! Just contact me directly if you’re interested in hosting this segment!
Now, enough rambling, let’s check out some art!
Leading us off today is JustCallMe_Ari with an incredibly pleasing bust shot!
Starting with the anatomy, I gotta say this is a fantastic anthro style. The animal features like the snout, ears, and fur are nicely defined, and I think the forward-facing perspective was executed wonderfully; the shape of the snout and all of its other features are just spot on. Then we have the more human characteristics – namely the little bit of the upper body that we see, and that also looks great. I also want to point out the expression. The character just has so much life and personality thanks to that chill, but silly, expression. I always love a blepping canine! Finally, I have to mention the colorwork. The coloring is overall very smooth with some nice depth in places like the clothes, accessories, and particularly the eyes. And the shadows throughout the piece also bring it all together nicely. The colorful effects surrounding the character’s head as well as the tiny colored background also fit quite nicely. All in all, this is a very aesthetically pleasing piece that I could honestly gaze at for hours. Good stuff, Ari.
⊱───⊰✯⊱───⊰
Up next is Fumiko presenting a marvelous scene!
Yet another fantastic anthro style! Although here, the anthro features do seem to stand out more. We get to see a lot of the character’s body and its proportions – which are all fantastic by the way – along with a complete outfit that covers most of the character. Then there’s the way the character is portrayed; their action and expression, as well as the setting, just convey a very mellow and serene feel as the character has its full attention on the rose. The way that this scene is put together just shows off so much life. That, along with the artist’s overall style just makes this seem as if it were one frame in an animated scene! The colors are also phenomenal; there’s subtle, but wonderful color depth throughout the piece, from the character’s outfit, to the vegetation, to the sky. Not to mention, the lighting and shadows are superb; the scene feels like one at dusk or sunset, and it’s just executed very well. This was actually an ArtFight revenge attack for Vilikir, and I’d like to think they’re more than happy with this attack! Seriously good work, Fumiko. You’re immensely talented!
⊱───⊰✯⊱───⊰
For today’s final piece, Rayo steps up with an intense scene!
All the elements in this piece are fantastic, making for a complete scene with tons of details to appreciate! The focus is no doubt on the Lucario character who looks ready to fight against the several foes in front of him, but the setting – and the care and detail that went into it – I think greatly enhances the piece. This looks like a nighttime brawl that’s about to happen, perhaps in a village of sorts as you see just a few homes, and what look like hills on the horizon along with the full moon. And of course, the Lucario’s pose and expression were executed exceptionally; it looks like he’s taking on a somewhat defensive stance as he faces his attackers who look ready to strike, but the way he holds his weapon and his angry expression along with the malicious expressions of those in the shadows just builds up tension so well – which is appropriate for a scene of an imminent fight. I also want to mention the colorwork, which has a nice, solid look throughout the piece, but the shadows and lighting effects also help set the scene nicely. I feel like I could go even deeper into different aspects of this artwork, but I think I’ve covered most of its highlights! Excellent work, Rayo! Hope to see more from you!
⊱───⊰✯⊱───⊰
That’s it for this edition of Art Corner! Thanks a bunch for stopping by! And don’t forget to show the artists some love! Check them out on their socials and give them a follow if you really liked their work!

WRITING SHOWCASE
Hello, everybody! My name is Dozu, and I have for you today a story of woe and dragons to read!
⊱────⊰✯⊱────⊰
Running
By Lovecatsanddragons
Summary: Nergi is a 4 year old dragonet who has just been cast out of his village for being a hybrid and being different from the other dragons. In his escape he encounters a way to the Sacred Lands, a place where all dragons are different. However, he faces a challenge to get there in the form of the mysterious figure with orange eyes before him.
Highlights: Very nicely formatted story, the paragraphs are nicely separated and the plot flows smoothly. Very good job!
For improvement: This story has a few little mistakes here and there, issues with spacing mostly but nothing that impedes the reading flow of the tale. There’s also a part at the end where the character’s thoughts are written without any mark of distinction. This can be fixed with some quotation marks or italics to emphasize thought.
Question time! Answer in a post and tag @FurryWeekly and @DoggyDozu if it’s on Twitter!
What do you think of dragons? Cool or overrated?
Do you like thunderstorms?
⊱────⊰✯⊱────⊰
That will be all for today folks. I hope you have enjoyed my pick!
Let’s give our authors a round of applause for their hard work! Remember to include the tags #FurryWeekly and #WritingShowcase in your posts if you want us to see your own writing on any platform! See you all next time, and now I'll sashay away.

WRITING 101
“It’s been almost seven years….”
Tad descends the stairs to his basement apartment, brown parcel in hand and the Camera peeking over his shoulder. He flips on the lights and settles at his desk, warm wood basking in the new glow. The hawk takes a deep breath and sighs, letting the smile work along his beak.
“Tell you what,” he says, pulling out a pair of scissors from the desk drawer. He slices open the tape securing the cardboard’s insides. “I’ve had pretty good luck with electronics… except for the PlayStation that I needed to fix. But I’m way overdue for an upgrade.”
He digs out the bubble wrap and packing materials. Tad unveils a large pristine white box, rectangular in shape and splashed with the name of the device inside. He collects the box; even this cardboard feels like premium material. He lifts away the lid to reveal the contents.
A brand-new smartphone sparkles brighter than crystal-clear water. In fact, it looks so perfect that Tad hesitates to pick it up. Something about the touch and smell of new electronics compels Tad to want to preserve the beautiful appearance. He reaches out, pauses, then picks up the phone. A larger phone for his larger hands… pure bliss.
“Ah… so this is what I’ve missed out on.”
⊱───⊰✯⊱───⊰
Hello friends, and welcome to Furry Weekly’s Writing 101! I’m Bryce Griffin, here to get all you writers out there the inside scoop on literature tips and tricks. Let’s get started!
⊱───⊰✯⊱───⊰
This week, we’re shifting gears away from tropes in literature to take a look at literary devices. We use literary devices all the time in our writing whether we realize it or not. Rather than focus on the most common ones, as we’ve previously done for Writing 101, we’ll be looking at some tricky, often misunderstood devices.
Situational irony is one of the looser subcategories of irony. Many examples in literature and in real life can take its form: a “NO SMOKING” sign next to a depiction of a smoking Sherlock Holmes in the Baker Street tube station; an Instant Pot taking ten times longer to cook rice than boiling it on a stovetop; or a story’s antagonist caught in the elaborate mechanized trap intended for the protagonist. It is an easy-to-understand concept, but proper execution takes some skillful writing and a good understanding of how to subvert expectations.
A good way to give situational irony the punch it deserves is to implement it at the most inconvenient time possible. Rather than making it a throwaway gag, make the irony a key point in the story. Use it to give your protagonist or their ally a difficult time when they really don’t need it. Sometimes, events in life happen by chance, whether for better or worse. Us writers craft our stories by manipulating events to share a narrative. A believable and engaging narrative comes from roadblocks that hinder the protagonist’s progress. An ironic outcome achieves just that. It’s more fun when a protagonist deals with things that don’t go to plan.
Keep the following in mind: situational irony is not coincidence! Is it unfortunate that your milk spoiled the day you were going to bake a cake? Absolutely. Is it ironic? Not in the slightest. Remember that irony is an outcome incongruous with what is expected. The situation will thus have two layers: the perceived layer seen by everyone, and the unperceived layer that suggests a deeper meaning. Your laptop battery dying during a remote job interview is not ironic. Interviewing a potential employee that used to be your boss at another job is a much better example of situational irony.

Tad turns the phone a few times over in his hands. He couldn’t describe it as anything other than… pleasant. The weight feels just right. The ergonomics make any position comfortable. The colors pop, but they also blend in. The multiple cameras do look a little silly, but at least they’re arranged very well.
Speaking of cameras… the Camera notices those mounted to the phone and focuses on them. A tiny shiver, fraught with metallic jingling, overtakes its chassis and draws Tad’s attention. If machines could perspire, Tad imagines a bead of sweat would have collected on the outside of its lens and dropped to the floor.
“It’s okay,” says Tad, holding up the smartphone. “These might take good pictures and videos, but they’ll never stack up to you. I promise.”
The Camera relaxes and lets out a relieved whirr.

FURSUIT FANATICS
Hihi, and welcome to yet another installment of Fursuit Fanatics with me, your host tahlmorra! Today we’re taking a nice long flight from last week’s locale of Australia, far and away Northwest to the Kingdom of the Netherlands; specifically, the southern province of Brabant. Here we have the pleasure of meeting a shiny-new fur of a nature not commonly seen in this part of the globe. Please join me in giving a warm welcome to today’s guest, Darwin, the red panda/fennec fox hybrid!
Darwin and his suiter Luc – both he/him pronouns – are from the beautiful southern region of the Netherlands. Darwin has the large ears emblematic of the fennec fox along with its color palette, while also sporting the distinctive markings and fluffy tail of a red panda. He has dark brown hand and feet paws that complement his belly fur, and a beige and light brown banded tail that matches the shading of his back and his headfur right down to the ‘tears’ under his eyes. He has no other distinguishing special features or set accessories, but when suiting for a convention or party he usually tries to find something to bring along that fits the theme of the event.
Darwin is Luc’s first fursuit as well as being his OG fursona. He’s also sporting that “new suit smell” still, having just been received in February 2023. Initially, Darwin was a partial, made by GalaxyHoosker, but a fullsuit is currently being worked on by the same maker. Luc says he has no particular plans for any future modifications, but he does know for certain that he’ll never sell Darwin. When I commented on how understandable that was, considering the general difficulties surrounding getting a new suit, he waved that aside saying, “Not just because it’s hard to get a suit. He’s my own design. I couldn’t say goodbye.”
With regards to public suiting, Luc says he only suits up for conventions, fur walks and parties. He says it’s primarily because he really likes seeing the smiles on people’s faces when they first see his suit. There’s also an understandable aspect of safety involved, “I love being a furry, but sometimes I come across people who call me names or touch my suit.. and that can be a bit scary.” As far as in-suit activities go, Luc says he sometimes does photoshoots, but mostly for fun and usually with family and friends. He’ll also suit for party entertainment sometimes, but other than that, doesn’t use the suit for anything.
The topic then turned to conventions and meets and, for such a new fur, Darwin is already quite well traveled. The first con he went to, fresh out of the box, was NordicFuzzCon in Malmö, Sweden, the last weekend of February 2023. He described it as amazing; he loved meeting the people there and said the parties were “...so much fun!” He also managed some photo shoots with friends while there. In late June 2023, Darwin made his second convention appearance at the Dutch ComiCon at Jaarbeurs, Utrecht. There, he says he was swamped with picture requests, enough that he was in-suit for at least six hours (wow!) to meet the demand. Currently, keeping up the rapid pace, Luc says he plans to attend Eurofurence, Europe’s largest furry convention, in early September 2023 in Hamburg, Germany.
Next, switching gears, I asked how he initially became, or considered himself a furry. Again, like Darwin, Luc is all but a brand-new addition to the furry community. He says it was in May of 2021, during the height of the coronavirus pandemic that things came together. Taking his love of creating characters, his regular habit of playing Dungeons & Dragons with friends and his passion for animals – having worked at a zoo for several years), he decided it might be fun to combine some of those hobbies. So, out of the boredom so many of us felt during the corona days and months, he hopped online to see what was up with the furry community. It turned out to be a good decision: “...honestly it has been a blast! I made so many friends the last few years. I’m very grateful.”
Asking about his choice of this specific fursona and fursuit, he says it was a choice based on indecision. Having a hard time choosing between a fennec fox and the red panda (”They are both way too cute!”) and feeling they both were a fit for his usual energy, he decided to mix them both all up and make him a hybrid. He also stated a definite preference for the animals’ natural color palettes rather than go for something bright or flashy.
Moving on to the subject of his personal experience of public suiting, he says he just tries to enjoy every bit of it. He says he loves the people around him, loves making people smile and loves taking pictures. He does have some cautionary words to others who may suit publicly: be sure to prepare if you intend to suit for a relatively long time, be sure to eat and drink enough beforehand, bring a fan or a few cool packs if it’s going to be hot out and he advises to bring someone around with you (handler), just in case you start feeling unwell.
Coming to the close of the interview, I brought up the question of memorable experiences he may have had while suiting and he recalled the events of his birthday in June (Happy Belated, Luc!!). There were so many friends attending from all over the Netherlands, including even some from Belgium and Germany, “We had so much fun suiting together and talking, playing games.”
Luc says among the things he likes, he (really) likes hanging out with friends as well as playing board games and the occasional drink from time to time. Particular dislikes are quite simple, saying he dislikes people who lie to him or try to use him, “I have been burned one too many times.” As for personal goals, he says he really doesn’t have any at present. Nothing more than enjoying himself and trying to share that happiness with others.
Lastly, I asked if he, as a reasonably new fur, had any advice for anyone considering becoming a furry. His response was very straightforward, “Go for it! Find some fun friends and enjoy!” That, I think, is good advice for anyone at any stage of their furry community experience!
If you think you might like to learn more about Darwin and Luc, or possibly follow them, you can find them on Instagram at darwin_fennecpanda!

PHOTOGRAPHY 101
This segment was originally released on Issue #241.
Hello, friends and photographers! Welcome to this week's Featuring Photography! I'm your host, Jaden (Discord @ Jaden711#0663)! And welcome back to photography 101! It's been awhile, but we’re back and ready to teach you about a new style. This week we’ll be going over:
Chiaroscuro (pronounced:key-rah-scur-row) is an art technique that dates back all the way to Ancient Greece and has been used all throughout the renaissance. If you’ve been a reader of photography 101 for a while, then you’d already know by now that art techniques that popular would only naturally make their way into photography. Chiaroscuro is, in its simplest form, very deep shadows with a very bright light source. An absolutely gorgeous example of this is “All of these emotions of mine” by Ryan Berry.
Keep in mind that Chiaroscuro doesn't explicitly have to be in black and white. It's simply a visual contrast between deep shadows and bright light and something like that isn't exclusive to monochrome photography, in fact, I encourage you to experiment with using colour to your advantage in Chiaroscuro since colours– like scarlet reds or other bright colours– can bring even more depth and emotion into your photo. Chiaroscuro is all about showing extreme emotion by showing the juxtaposition between light and dark, and using harsh bright colours helps accentuate that more.
Achieving Chiaroscuro is pretty easy. All you have to do is under-expose your photo using your camera settings! Pointing your camera near the light source also helps achieve much darker shadows, and, of course, lowering the brightness in post-production also helps a ton, however, if editing isn't really your thing, I promise your results will be just as beautiful by just simply lowering your camera's contrast!
⊱───⊰✯⊱───⊰
That concludes this week's segment! If you have any questions or would like constructive criticism on any of your photos, don't be afraid to shoot me (Discord @ Jaden711#0663) a message!

FURSUIT DESIGNING TIPS
Making Paws
If you haven't read the first part yet, please do so first as I will most likely forget things to add for it.
It basically goes the same way as making the four-fingered pattern, but we will be installing silicone paw pads in this example.
Though, it's always possible to follow the example of last week on how to add soft paw pads into these. Just mix and match to your needs!
What you need for your paws is:
☆A scrap fabric if you want to make mock up paws
☆Your fur in the colour of your character
☆A pen (I like to use coloured pencils for sketching)
☆2 or more A4 (8 ½” x 11”) papers, although they’re not needed if you use a premade pattern
☆Your sewing supplies
☆Fabric for your paw pads/silicone paw pads
☆Permanent markers
☆Your claws. I can also make a quick topic on how to sculpt claws later on
☆Stuffing for your paw pads if you sow them on
☆Contact glue to glue the silicon paws in place
So, as we previously made a pattern with four fingers, we are now going to be doing the same but with five fingers.
So grab your paper, short side facing you, and trace your hand with a little space around your fingers, making sure your fingers are properly spread apart so you got enough space to pattern.
With green, I went pretty close around my fingers this time. To fix this, I add about 0.5 centimeters to 1 centimeter (0.2 to 0.4 inches) around them where possible, often between fingers you have a little wiggle room.
In purple is the ‘’correct’’ line to follow for the pattern.
Now as these are the paws of Julian, I don't need to be very creative in making the pattern more intricate. If your paws need more, please check out the four-fingered paws segment as I talked about altering a pattern in them more clearly.
I cut the purple line out and traced it on my fur to sew it all together and added the slits for my claws into it.
Again, for more info please read the last article as I go into way more detail there.
Now, assuming you made your patterns, cut them out and sewed everything, flipped them inside out and are ready to install the silicone paw pads and claws – we are going to continue there.
The installment of pawpads is pretty sloppy, so we are going to cut a slit in the tips of the fingers for claws, and slide them in from the inside out. Claws often have a little blacking that sticks out more than the claws themselves, hence why they stay in place pretty easily.
Now for the paw pads, put on your paws, see how they fit, and how your hand moves inside them.
You want to place your paw pads on a natural looking place without them limiting your movement too much. I tend to have the large hand pad one a little up high and above the ‘’fold’’ in my glove.
Your pawpads can go either at the tips directly on the fingertip, or like most animals a little over the tip.
Do not put them half way your fingers, it will look unnatural and limit your movement greatly!
To install the paw pads, I cut the fur in the area as short as I could, so the bit covered by the paw pad needs to be basically gone. I put on medical gloves as I glued them on whilst wearing them to ensure their position was comfy etc. and then added two compartment glue to both the fur and the paw pads’ backing. They are often covered in fabric or felt so they can be glued on as silicone does not grip greatly.
Now please read the instructions of your glue and follow safety rules how silly they might sound!
And once you did everything as written here, you probably ended up with paws for your fluffy character!
⊱───⊰✯⊱───⊰
Next time I will be covering how to make arm sleeves, so I hope this tutorial of sorts was useful for you all.
Till then, and if you have any questions or want a better pic of the pattern, do not hesitate to reach out to me through Instagram.

⊱───⊰✯⊱───⊰
We start with GiMarques, a Brazilian artist who specializes in furry art. His painterly art style is neat! He offers icons, half bodies, full bodies, and reference sheets as commission options. All of them are worth checking out.
You can find his prices and links to his other social media on his Carrd. Feel free to message him if you are interested in a commission and/or if you have any questions.
⊱───⊰✯⊱───⊰
Last but certainly not least, we have Hol, a United Kingdom artist who specializes in dapper and cute animal based art. Their art looks amazing in a semi-realistic style! If you’ve been looking to dapper your characters, this is an artist for you.
Hol offers only traditional dippy (chibi) and dapper animal based commissions that are well worth the price. Certain things such as postage and backgrounds for these commissions will cost extra. You can find Hol’s prices and links to their other social media on their Linktree. Feel free to message them if you have any questions and/or if you’re interested in a commission.

CHARACTER INTERVIEW
Hey everyone, how’s it going? This is Yeshua and I’m here to bring you another chat with someone from the community. This time, we’re taking a deep dive into part of the music community in the fandom.
YESHUA: I’m happy to introduce Finn! Tell us a little about yourself, if you would?
FINN: Well, I'm Finn! Just a little raccoon from Germany. I've been active in the fandom since around 2016 and [have] since kind of just been around here and there. I've always tried my best either creating comfortable community spaces for example on Discord, or some broader projects to help out artists in one way or another. One of the things I'm personally the most passionate about is music, which is why both my previous and my current main project is a Furry Music Label meant to help artists and creators, and offer an easy place to find furry-made tunes for listeners.
Outside of being productive, I just cuddle everyone who lets me for as long as I'm able!
YESHUA: It's super good to meet you, Finn! I'm definitely interested in hearing more about your furry music label! Sounds like an incredibly ambitious but very worthwhile project. Tell me a little bit about what that project's looking like right now, if you don't mind?
FINN: Likewise! Well, it's a spiritual successor to my previous label named Fuzznet Music, which saw quite a bit of success but sadly ran into funding issues and some personal war-related time constraints.
The idea stays the same though, with a bunch of improvements in the management side of things. Our new label, Aural Alliance, is currently in the setting-up phase of things. We've already got about 20 musicians on board and are preparing our first few releases.
Execution and goal are as follows: we want to create a proper and professional distribution label that truly cares for each member, makes it easy for listeners to find and support new artists, as well as allow content creators to freely use our stuff for their projects. Unlike many other (and our previous) labels, this time around we actually collect all revenue and share it among the whole team and use a portion of it for all our operational costs and side-projects. Still working out a few of the details but we made sure to build on a solid foundation and go from there.
At the core for artists though, we basically offer folks to get their music across all platforms (Spotify and the like), promote it professionally, give them access to services like Splice or make sure the less fortunate ones get their grocery bills covered when needed. Entirely for free! Funded by myself, our supporters and a portion of our revenue.
YESHUA: 20 musicians are already on board? That's insane! I'll be honest, I personally am not very familiar with how business plans work, but from what you're saying it sounds like this will really benefit both the artists signed to the label -- financially and with promotions -- as well as the fandom as a whole if people can use these artist's work! It's genuinely impressive hearing this plan! So it sounds like artists’ work would be available on common streaming platforms?
FINN: Haha yeah we had over 40 applications rights away and had to unfortunately draw a line somewhere. With Fuzznet we had over 50 members at the end of it.
And thank you! It's ambitious and expensive but it's a common agreement within the music community that there needs to be a better support and discovery infrastructure within the fandom. Compared to the visual arts, audio often gets left behind. We also used to have a page where we collected a database of ALL the musicians in the fandom (which we're also planning to re-do from scratch) and it was immensely popular for exactly those reasons.
Also exactly, all our music will be put across all the digital platforms. Bandcamp, Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube, you name it. I also hope we eventually get to distribute some physical media (CDs, tapes, Vinyls) but that'd be a long way down the line from here haha.
YESHUA: It's great hearing about the excitement for it though! This is indeed a great project though; there are tons of other art forms in the furry fandom including music, so seeing that people are passionate about it and are trying to make it more visible is honestly just awesome.
And heck yeah! I'm sure folks will find and follow new favorite artists within the fandom, so having their work available -- and for free -- on common platforms just sounds fantastic! Do you have other goals or other aspects of this furry label project beyond what we've talked about so far? Anything in particular you might be especially excited about?
FINN: Those would be the main plans. I have a few other ideas on how to support artists more directly that aren't signed up with us at some point. But that's all a bunch of "if"s based on other "if"s. Think of something like "Make-A-Wish" but for musicians in need of funding a new synthesizer or piece of software or similar. Basically, I don't really plan to profit off of anything, I just want to make sure we manage to get as much as possible to then reinvest back into the community.
If you perhaps have heard of the Furry Music Anthology before, they're a nice handful of artists who came together and created a few big collaboration albums where the profits go towards charity. I'm in talks with the organizer to use our infrastructure that we're building to essentially also bring it to streaming services as it's only been on Bandcamp previously, to help get it heard by more people, and gather more money for charity!
Right now it's definitely a blast for me listening and seeing all that behind the scenes work and unreleased tracks happening while we're working on releases we want to put out. Making the website for the musicians database is also very big on my list. It's been hard finding the right people (developers) for it, but I think I might have a few folks now.
All in all, I just hope to make "Furry music" – that is, furries making music, not "furry" music as some might confuse it with – as much of a staple as the other arts and crafts we got in our community. Although shout-out to all the writers there that similarly struggle with getting their deserved public attention.
YESHUA: That "Make-A-Wish" styled support sounds so cool! I love that idea! And partnering with the Furry Music Anthology also sounds neat, especially if it helps a good cause!
I can definitely imagine you've got a lot of work ahead of you working on finishing setting up the label, but it truly looks like you have some solid ideas that will greatly benefit a lot of people!
So now I'm curious; what inspired you to embark on this journey? It's quite the task you've got, but how did you get to it?
FINN: Quite indeed. It's a ton of work, but I'm a lot more prepared this time around.
I've always tried to be social and have that itch to just help folks. And I guess making a label like this just combined that desire to help with something I really love, furries and music!
But it especially motivated me since a good number of great friends are musicians that struggled a lot. And then learning about the state of things I just figured I'd try doing something about it.
YESHUA: Hey, you learned from your previous experience and that's great!
And combining what you like to do to make something special makes a lot of sense! Just so happens that what you're doing is a huge project with so much potential! But no doubt it's fantastic seeing folks take their passions to such heights! Especially in your case where you saw an issue and wanted to solve it; that's definitely a good motivator as well.
Do you have anything else about your project that you'd like to share at all that we haven't touched on? Perhaps some.. sneak peeks at anything you might be able to show off? No pressure of course, but I'm genuinely curious!
FINN: Thank you! And I think that about covers most of it. I don't think there's much to sneak peek just yet, but we'll make sure to post about anything of sorts once we have something.
Right now, we're working on a collaborative album that involves everyone who manages to create a track within a certain timeframe, and there's already a few releases on the horizon by some of our members that should go up within the next month, including an emotional metal piece and some minimal tech beats with a few remixes alongside them. But with over 20 artists in, you can be sure that once we get going and establish our routines, there will be a lot of music flowing as fast as I can get it all uploaded, haha!
I plan to also restructure my Discord server into a more music-centered server. Both for people engaging with our work, and for others to exchange their stuff. That one's gonna take a little longer though.
For everything else, I guess things will evolve as we go. We'll be doing things nobody before really did at this scale within our fandom, and it's hard to be certain about many plans, especially with funding being such a big factor in pretty much every aspect. Very confident about it though! And unlike our previous label, at least this time we can make sure that even IF we run out of money and have to close our doors, all our releases up to that point will remain on platforms permanently for people to use and listen to.
YESHUA: Ooo some releases already coming up, huh? And that was something else I wanted to mention; looks like there will be a nice variety in the genres you all come out with given the more than two dozen artists already on it!
Although that's true, it makes sense that funding will play a big role in what other things you all can do with the label, but so far, it all sounds very exciting!
FINN: Oh yeah for sure! We have a super diverse roster, and generally want to make sure we have as broad of a scope as possible. There should be something for everyone, eventually.
We have enough funds secured already for probably a year or two of purely the operational costs – like our web presence, necessary subscriptions and whatnot – and I think with how things are looking already, we should be doing pretty well. As mentioned earlier with learning a lot from our previous attempt, our new structure lowers our costs compared to Fuzznet to just around a third, which should make things a lot easier for us.
YESHUA: That's great! Surely that'll let folks in the fandom find artists who make music they enjoy, and who knows? Maybe find other genres they'll end up liking!
Oh wow, those are some pretty solid finances! I definitely wish you and everyone involved the absolute best so that this can run for a long time to come!
As for the folks reading right now, is there anything else about this project that you'd perhaps like for them to know? Anything at all?
FINN: Thanks a bunch! And I suppose the most important things would be where to find us! Haha.
Our website is at www.auralalliance.page, and you'll find us everywhere else either as Aural Alliance (on Spotify etc., once our pages are up) or @AuralAlliance on Twitter and Mastodon.
And, that goes for pretty much any musician out there, a $5 donation will always be more money than 1000 streams.
YESHUA: Heck yeah, definitely a project worth keeping tabs on! I'm very happy to have had the chance to talk about it with you!
Shifting gears a little, I'm curious as to whether you're involved in the fandom in any other way?
FINN: I can only extend my thanks for having me!
But yeah, I only really have my modest little Discord server otherwise. Sadly, even after years I've never yet been on a con or anything. Sure would love to, though!
Besides that, I've had my hands in here and there. Helped with social media marketing and some design aspects for the SALLY Fursuit series (Season 1), helped out with the original thumbnail for the The Fandom documentary, and occasionally was in some other people's little videos. Been a while though. And definitely spend too much time on Furry Twitter.
YESHUA: Of course! It's my pleasure!
Ah, I really hope you do get the chance to go to a con! Haven't met anyone who's said they didn't have a good time, and I feel like you'd really enjoy it!
And hey, being involved in other people's projects and helping out with some of that stuff is really cool! Sounds like you're eager to just lend a helping hand -- or paw -- in the fandom, which is honestly very respectable! As for Furry Twitter.. well, I think a lot of us are guilty of that one hahah. It can be fun though!
FINN: I think for now I definitely have enough to do haha, but well yeah, like I said before I'd love to work with you lads in one way or another, and I hope I eventually can get a better drawing hand to draw fuzzy animals with.
YESHUA: Not wrong, definitely don't overload yourself with too much! You're already doing a ton of really cool and meaningful stuff!
And we'll just have to see what we can do! We're always up for collaborating with folks! And all the best with drawing -- I think it's something anyone can do and I'm sure you will too!
Before we wrap up, any parting words at all for the folks reading?
FINN: Thanks again for having me, and for everyone out there for reading!
Hope we manage to brighten up some people's ears and see each other around!
With much love, and many hugs!

CONVENTION CALENDAR
Greetings and salutations, readers! I’m Shetani, your Convention Calendar segment host for this issue. I hope our canine readers are keeping cool during the dog days of summer, though if you live in the southern hemisphere, it’s quite the opposite! Whether it’s warm or cold where you are, Furry Weekly HQ is always the coziest place to be - after all, there’s no weather in cyberspace. In any case, let’s dive into all the July furry conventions and events happening online, around the world, and in your neck of the woods.
⊱───⊰✯⊱───⊰
Anthrocon is in full swing through Sunday July 2 at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA. Anthrocon has decided on the theme “Anthropolis - Our Furry City” for this year, celebrating the unique partnership this furry convention shares with its host city of Pittsburgh. In keeping with this theme, Anthrocon forgoes choosing a 2023 guest of honor, to underline how everybody contributes to making the furry community great. Anthrocon will, however, spotlight a charity: Rabbit Wranglers, a Pittsburgh-based nonprofit that helps abused, neglected, and abandoned rabbits and educates the public to improve the lives of these companion animals. A charity auction and poker tournament are being held to benefit the organization.
As the current third-largest furcon worldwide, there’s plenty to do and see at Anthrocon. In addition to classic con staples like a Dealer’s Den and Artist Alley, masquerade, games room, fursuit parade, nighttime dances with DJs, and photobooth, Anthrocon 2023 will feature multiple fursuit friendly sightseeing cruises, and more panels, meetups, and events than you can brandish a branch at. Even that doesn’t fully encompass the fun-filled schedule that awaits attendees, so be sure to check out Anthrocon’s website to get the full scope of events! Anthrocon requires proof of full COVID-19 vaccination or a negative test, and masking in specified areas of con space.

ČeSFuR veterans will be happy to know that traditional activities and events like the art show, fursuit game show, dance competition, dealer’s den, and bonfire barbecue are on the docket once again. Special events this year include various meet and greets, a hiking trip, a NERF gun battle, and a Lockpicking for Dummies panel. This marks the first time the con’s programming extends to five full days of fun and excitement. This year's theme is Valhalla, quite an apt choice for a Danish convention! Attendees can expect board gaming, fursuiting, an art auction on the last day of the con, and plenty of inexpensive drinks. The minimum age requirement to attend Furtastic is 16. Furtastic has an attendee limit of 80, which at the time of writing, has already been reached. If you missed your chance to buy tickets, there’s always next year!

For the first time, FurryEST has chosen a theme - Waves and Flames - wherein attendees will be able to take part in various events during the weekend to show support for their chosen element, fire or water.
Unfortunately, FurryEST didn’t receive enough interest to host a Dealer’s Den this year, but artists will still be allowed to sell their wares informally at the con. Past iterations have included water-bike rides, outdoor sports, canoe racing, tabletop games, DJs, a bonfire, and fursuiting, of course. If you hope to attend FurryEST, bring a photo ID and make sure you’re at least 18 years old on the first day of the con.
